Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association Welcomes Five New Directors

Saskatoon, SK (June 18, 2020) >> The Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association held their Annual General Meeting of Members on June 15, 2020 and five new Directors were voted onto the Board, adding to an already impressive group of housing professionals.

Board Chair Cam Skoropat welcomed the new Directors yesterday, who were selected through a recruitment process and a highly competitive pool. “The Board conducts an analysis every year to determine the skills and representation that would be required at the table for future projects and advocacy files we see coming on the horizon,” explains Skoropat “and we could not have asked for a stronger complement to our Board.”

The five new Directors starting their first two-year term are:

Christian Braid, President and Owner of Braid Flooring
Karl Miller, Founder and CEO of Meridian
Curtis Olson, CEO of Shift Development
Andrew Wagner, Founder and Director of Construction at Maison Design + Build
Brad Zurevinski, General Manager of Dream Development

Now a Board of 13, Director biographies highlighting their expertise and involvements in the housing industry can be found here: https://saskatoonhomebuilders.com/about/board/.

“The Association has made some significant strides in the world of infill in our City and formalizing my role as a Director only made sense.” Comments Olson, who was key in participating in the Mayors’ Infill Roundtable in 2017, a new idea managed by the Association through the help of key players.

Braid has been a supportive member of certified builders through Braid Flooring for generations. “I think the time was right to finally elevate my support, especially at a time when we are seeing so many contributions to ensure the new housing market in our region remains affordable and our region remains competitive.”

“My time is very valuable, and I am careful where I spend it,” commented Wagner. “Contributing to my professional association as a certified builder is absolutely an effective use of my time.” Miller also expressed the same message. “I spend my days pushing against red tape and making things happen, adding my expertise to the decision-making table of the Association will help my business and hopefully the industry and our region.”

Zurevinski was already an active member of the builder industry liaison committee, the professional group delegated authority by the Board to review and discuss advocacy files impacting housing. “I think my background on that committee will absolutely be an asset at the Board table and am thrilled to be selected to serve.”

Association CEO Chris Guérette is also thrilled with the new complement. “I am a firm believer that an experienced and toned Board at the top is the foundational leadership required for a strong association. I am very much looking forward to pushing the limits and enhancing our conversations – that’s where the magic will happen and how we will bring the growth of our city to new levels.”

The Association also took the time to thank departing Directors Deidre Larmour and Ronn Lepage. It will be hard for many to see Lepage, having reached his maximum length possible as a Director after serving five consecutive terms, depart the Board table. “Ronn was 2nd Vice Chair for much of his tenure and he was invaluable in enhancing our financial reporting and tracking,” explains Skoropat. “We would be in a very different place, certainly not as strong, if Ronn would not have devoted his time and expertise the way he did.”

The new Board meets later this month to select its new executive and get to work continuing to advocate for improved affordability, quality, and choice of housing in our region.

Today the Government of Saskatchewan announced the delayed implementation of Tier 3 energy efficiency standards for new homes by one year to January 1, 2026. The SRHBA advocated for this extension in order to ensure that all home builders were adequately prepared to achieve the targets, while still being able to mitigate costs that would have directly impacted new home affordability. It’s important to note that new homes in Saskatchewan already meet high energy efficiency standards, offering homeowners reduced utility costs, greater comfort, and improved indoor air quality. Saskatchewan continues to be a leader in building homes that prioritize energy efficiency and sustainability, currently operating at a higher energy code tier than much of the country. This additional time allows the industry to further build on its strengths while continuing to deliver top-quality, energy-efficient homes for Saskatchewan homeowners. We are grateful to the Saskatchewan government for allowing the homebuilding industry the additional time to reach higher levels of energy efficiency and provide homeowner benefits well into the future! ... Safety, shelter, support. This is what housing provides. And, more housing is so needed. The YWCA Saskatoon turned away 4200 women and children last year because they just didn’t have the space. They do not know where they go. Please consider supporting the Hope Lives Here Campaign by purchasing a ticket on the She-Shed Lottery. Proceeds will go towards building new transitional housing at the YWCA, providing safe spaces for women and children in need. Winning the She-Shed would be amazing! And helping women and children in Saskatoon is definitely more amazing!🩷Thank you! ... See MoreSee Less
