Section 9.36 of the National Building Code – Practical Strategies & Thermal Assembly Calculations


This is a practical application workshop with primary focus on the calculation of Thermal Envelope Assemblies.  Participants will learn how to calculate and document the effective R-values of thermal assemblies as required by Section 9.36 of the 2015 National Building Code.  This will also include practical strategies to meet the new compliance requirements of the code related to energy efficiency.

This 3-hour workshop is intended for professional builders, site supervisors, estimators, and design/drafting professionals.

Participants will learn about key requirements of Section 9.36, including:

Building Envelope Assemblies

  • Nominal vs. Effective R-values
  • Effective R-value calculations including:
    • Main walls, tall walls, garage walls
    • Foundation walls, joist headers
    • Attics, cathedral ceilings
    • Cantilevers, bonus room floors

Fenestration

  • Maximum U-values for windows & doors

Options for code compliance:

  • Prescriptive path
  • Performance path
